Library Construction

In January, 2009 the village chiefs, elders and community members gathered for the ground breaking ceremony for the Senchi Ferry Library.  The land was blessed, prayers were offered, libations were poured and ancestors were called upon to bring protection to the construction site.  I was  honored to be a part of this long awaited day.

For three weeks I became one of the workers, the  only woman on this constructoin crew.  The Senchi Ferry village men came to work each day as volunteers.   Their pay was the satisfaction of being in contribution to their community.  Each day they toiled in the hot sun with laughter and song.

The work was extremely physical.  Everything was done by hand.  The ground was broken with a pick ax. Trenches were dug with shovels.  Cement was mixed on the ground by combining sand, gravel, rock and cement mix.  Women carried buckets of water on their head from 50 yards away.  The strength and stamina of the people is astounding.
